Be sure to shop and compare prices on vacuums and save money for other home décor like furniture or kitchenware.

Vacuum cleaners were a luxury item until after World War II, when the middle classes began buying them in large quantities. (...)

Vacuum cleaners were a luxury item until after World War II, when the middle classes began buying them in large quantities. (The fact that wall-to-wall carpet was now standard in most homes was also a factor.) Soon a variety of models and styles emerged, forcing consumers to figure out which kind of vacuum cleaner was right for them.

The most common style is the upright vacuum cleaner, which has the bag mounted on the handle. The whole unit is pushed around the carpet, with the suction intake on the bottom.

Another familiar type is the canister. This has the bag and the motor in a cylinder-shaped unit mounted on wheels, with a hose coming out of it to suck up the dirt. The hose makes the canister vacuum cleaner a little easier to use when it comes to tight spots, though most upright cleaners have optional hose attachments, too.

Some specialized canister vacuums are known as wet vacs or wet/dry vacs and can be used to clean up liquid spills, too.

A variation of the canister cleaner is the backpack vacuum, which has the user wearing the canister portion on his back. This is used almost exclusively in cleaning commercial areas such as offices and schools. Wearing the canister rather than pushing it around on wheels means the worker can cover a lot of ground more quickly.

One modern variation is built-in or central vacuum cleaners. Under this system, a home or office has the vacuum built directly into the walls, with ports in every room. You simply plug a hose into the port and do your vacuuming, the debris taken away to a central container that only needs to be emptied a few times a year. Since the suction unit doesn't have to be portable, it can be stronger than the type used in traditional vacuum cleaners.

Looking for ways to improve your home's appearance…without spending a fortune? Here's how I gave our old family room a burst of color - without bursting our budget!

I was tired of looking at the same old earth tones in our family room. Everything seemed so “safe” and blah.

With winter storms blowing in every week, I wanted a fresh burst of spring! But I had to stay within a budget as we just finished up with holiday spending.

I browsed through Pier 1 Imports and with great ease I collected a few colorful and well-made items and put those together to coordinate an outstanding new look for our family room that screamed “fresh and alive!” I began by removing the throw pillows that came with our sofas. I replaced them with bright gold pillows. I was just looking for a splash of color to brighten those sofas.

On the walls, I relocated a hanging clock and took down old tired pieces of artwork and replaced them with paintings with the same vibrant gold color to honor the new theme: new life! Pier 1 had some gorgeous silk florals on sale and I teamed them up with a handsome red hand blown glass vase for a stunning look.

Finally, I grouped a cluster of simple white glass candle holders of various sizes, inserted brand new scented yellow candles and the look was elegant, yet comfortable and new. For less than $150 I changed a tired room and gave it a clean, fresh new look.

That’s all we needed!

We didn’t need to paint, buy new furniture etc. It just needed a lift, and our spirits soared.

You don’t always have to think big when redecorating. Something as small as new throw pillows and new scattered throw rugs might be all you need.

Have fun!

Great-looking tailored carpeting and floor covering requires constant work to keep it looking beautiful. (...)

Great-looking tailored carpeting and floor covering requires constant work to keep it looking beautiful. A steam vacuum cleaner allows you to make quick work of those traffic pattern areas and anywhere deep dirt collects. You're not the first person to have dirt tracks through your home and on your carpets. If you have kids, dirt tracks, juice stains and miscellaneous food debris discolorations on your carpet are just the fact of life. With the steam vacuum cleaner however, it's much easier to keep your carpets looking their best.

The steam vacuum cleaner is actually not steam based, but uses a cleaning solution in hot water to clean your carpet. Preparation and pre spotting is the key to removing the stains and discolorations. You can actually rent a steam vacuum cleaner at your local hardware store or supermarket. These rentals are typically made for two days at a fixed price which is more than enough time to clean your carpets. Although many people pay for a heavy-duty carpet cleaning service, a steam vacuum cleaner rental is a great idea between those more expensive cleanings.

But the large expense of a steam vacuum rental however is in the cleaning solutions and chemicals. Here are a few carpet cleaning solution chemicals that are a lot less expensive and are claimed to do just as good a job. This is a good time to remind you to be very careful using any type of chemicals.

It's also important to test all chemicals even those specifically recommended for steam vacuum cleaners before using on your carpet. One quick way to check is to take a white cloth dipped it in the chemicals and rub your carpet in a hidden spot to check for color fastness. If any color transfers to your rag, the dyes used in your carpet will not hold up to the chemical recipes selected.

Here are a few home carpet cleaning recipes that have been very successful.

1. Go to the local janitorial supply and pick up pre-mixed carpet steam vacuum cleaning solution by the gallon

2. 3 teaspoons of cheap, non moisturizing clear dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup of ammonia, and 1/4 cup of vinegar to 2 gallons of water.

3. Use equal portions of very hot water and Windex window cleaner. You can buy Windex or plain window cleaner by the gallon at your local janitorial supply store. Just find any window cleaner that has ammonia in the ingredients.

4. Pre-treat your carpets, using a spray bottle with very hot water in an oxygenating bleach such as Oxy-clean. I personally have used regular chlorine bleach and hot water in a 1% solution on my light gray carpets to make them much brighter. [10 parts water and 1 part bleach]

Remember that whatever steam carpet cleaner chemicals you select be certain to rinse your carpets thoroughly. The key to keeping your carpets cleaner longer is to remove all of the soap and chemicals used to clean them. Many steam cleaning solutions can act as a dirt magnet making your carpets look dull and dirty much faster.

Using a steam vacuum cleaner rental can be much less expensive than having a service in to clean your carpets. If you clean your carpets at least twice a year however, it may be worth while considering the purchase of your own steam vacuum.

There are many top rated vacuums available to the consumer these days, so how do you choose the vacuum cleaner that is right for you? The answer is to know what you want from your new vacuum cleaner.

There used to be only a few leading brands of vacuum cleaners to choose from but now the consumer has a much greater choice of top quality vacuum cleaners. This is good news for the consumer; however it does make buying a new vacuum cleaner a confusing business. To help you choose the best vacuum cleaner for your needs, you should first know exactly what you want from a vacuum. Below are some of qualities of the market leaders. Hopefully it should help you make the right choice when you buy your new vacuum cleaner.

Everyone has heard about Dyson vacuum cleaners. Dyson is a new, innovative company that has established itself as a market leader in manufacturing vacuum cleaners. The main strength of a Dyson vacuum cleaner is it innovative use of creating powerful suction using centrifugal force rather than the old fashioned system of using the dust bag to create suction. Dyson call it the RootCyclone system. With older style vacuum cleaners, as the dust bag filled the suction power diminished. Dyson vacuums don't suffer from the loss of suction. Also, Dyson vacuum cleaners don't use dust bags; you simply empty the canister of dust straight into the trash. Because a Dyson vacuum is bagless you never have to buy the manufacturers dust bags, which can sometimes be difficult to get hold of, or can be expensive. Dyson have continued to show innovation when it comes to vacuum cleaner design. For instance, the Dyson DC15 is the first and only vacuum cleaner to feature the very unique ball - the ball makes manoeuvring the vacuum much easier than conventional uprights. However Dyson vacuum cleaners do have some disadvantages. First is the price: Dyson vacuum cleaners are typically more expensive than other vacuum cleaner brands. Also, not everyone likes emptying a bagless vacuum, as this can be a rather messy affair.

Hoover vacuum cleaners used to be the biggest selling vacuum in the world but in recent years their sales have tumbled. I'm glad to say that Hoover has taken note and has spent considerable effort in designing new ranges of vacuum cleaners. We have recently seen the launch of the Hoover WindTunnel vacuum cleaner, which the company claims picks up 56% more dirt off the carpet than does a Dyson. The Hoover FloorMate vacuum cleaner is specifically made for hardwood floor and is unsurpassed by other brands. Also, the Hoover SteamVac is the market leader for steam vacuum cleaners - this model deep cleans any carpet, leaving it dry to the touch. It is hoped that Hoover will continue its efforts in restoring its position as the number one vacuum cleaner manufacturer. After all, if manufacturers put more research and development into making better vacuum cleaners this can only be good news for the consumer.

Another good carpet cleaning vacuum cleaner is the top rated Atlantis Express from Eureka. Eureka claim that the InstaRinse Cleaning System lets you to shampoo, then rinse, all with the push of a button, so you'll have cleaner carpets. The Atlantis Express also has a separate shampoo cartridge that fits right in the cleaning nozzle so there's never any messy premixing of shampoo and water. If its weight you're concerned about then you should know that Eureka makes some of the most lightweight vacuum cleaners on the market. The Eureka 437AZ comes with a looped handle for a more comfortable grip, a 2 motor and HEPA filtration system.

Oreck vacuum cleaners have been around along time and they look like it. The outward design of the Oreck hasn't really changed in decades and, for many, can look rather old fashioned. However, Oreck have made many changes to their vacuum cleaner. The Oreck XL Deluxe Vacuum, which has a 50% filtration improvement, now eliminates 99.99% of all allergens down to 0.3 microns. Another advantage of owning an Oreck vacuum cleaner is their sturdiness. Oreck vacuum cleaners were originally designed for commercial use and their rugged, simple design means that they'll last years and finding spare parts and servicing is very easy.

If you're looking for a quiet vacuum cleaner, then you might consider buying an Electrolux ultra quiet Harmony Canister Vacuum with HEPA Filter. This vacuum is the quietest on the market. Electrolux also make the most sophisticated vacuum on the market today; the Trilobite. The Trilobite vacuum cleaner from Electrolux is a robot vacuum that does all the work for you. You simply switch it own and away it goes. The Trilobite has an onboard computer which maps out your home, so that very quickly it learns the most efficient route to take when vacuuming your floor. Unfortunately, cutting edge technology doesn't come cheap, so buying the Electrolux Trilobite is something few can afford.

The key to buying the best vacuum cleaner on the market today is knowing what you want from a vacuum cleaner. Once you're clear on what you want, then finding the best vacuum cleaner for your needs is much easier.

There are a variety of Hoovers from affordable to really expensive, but all of them do a good job of sucking up the dirt and keep your floors clean. There are bag and bagless varieties as well as HEPA and non HEPA vacuums. You can spend under $100 all the way up to several hundred for a Hoover. Fortunately, they last a long time so you won’t need Hoover vacuum parts any time soon. Of all the vacuums on the market, if you buy a Hoover you will have a good vacuum.

Dyson

Dyson vacuums are generally more expensive than other brands, but the benefit is that they work. Not to mention that if you spend a little more money on a Dyson up front you won’t have to replace it for many years which means your investment will go further. If you want a vacuum that does a great job and lasts for years then buy a Dyson.

Panasonic

Many individuals are talking about how great Panasonic vacuums are, especially for the price. If you are on a budget then you will love one of these vacuums and not spend too much either. You can find them at any super store or department store and will spend less than $100, but will get a great vacuum.

There are many other vacuum cleaners on the market, but don’t waste your time trying to figure out which one is best when you have three of the top brands listed here. Pick out the vacuum that best suits your budget and home and just enjoy cleaning!

Euro-Pro make a number of different appliances, however its vacuum cleaners are sold under the brand name of Shark. (...)

Euro-Pro make a number of different appliances, however its vacuum cleaners are sold under the brand name of Shark. Shark vacuum cleaners have received some negative reviews about some its models but this shouldn't necessarily deter you from buying its vacuums.

Shark vacuum cleaners are mass produced units that are sold at substantially lower prices than their competitors. They're found in large department stores and can be readily bought online. Also, parts and bags are very easy and inexpensive to buy.

Now let's talk about those negative reviews. The complaints are mainly about its canisters. There have been complaints about them clogging and overheating. To make matters worse many customers have complained about the poor level of customer service from both the retailer and the company. Complaints about company service are notoriously difficult to make a judgment on; after all, many customers will still complain, even if the retailer replaces the vacuum at no cost.

However, Shark upright vacuum cleaners fair rather better. The Shark Infinity NV30 is the company's flagship model. It's a bagless, cyclonic vacuum cleaner. So, if you don't like bagless, then the Shark vacuum cleaner isn't for you. However, if you do like cyclonic vacuums but can't justify the spending the large amount of cash required for a Dyson or Hoover WindTunnel vacuum, then you might be interested in what Shark has to offer. It retails for considerably less than either of them - half the price of the Dyson DC07 Original.

It also comes with a lifetime, washable filter, so there won't be any additional running costs on either bags or filters.

The Infinity comes with a large 12 amp motor and a 12" cleaning surface - a little on the small side but okay for most homes (14" for the Dyson and 15" for the Hoover). Its weight is just over 19 lbs which is the same as the Dyson Original. Other good features include; 5 height adjustments; furniture guard bumper; edge cleaning bristles; and an ergonomic grip on the handle. The power cord is 25 foot in length which is rather short; the Dyson comes with 37 feet, although the Hoover WindTunnel only comes with 28 feet.

Another shortcoming for some will be that it does not have automatic carpet height adjustment unlike the Dyson and Hoover. But, it does have a feature lacking in both the Dyson and Hoover; a headlight!

But seriously, the Shark infinity upright vacuum cleaner does lack some of the feature of its competitors and some of its specification do look a little under par when compared to the others, however, it does cost half as much. Not everyone needs automatic carpet height adjustment and a cord length of 18 feet will be perfectly acceptable for some.

As I've stated already, vacuum cleaner reviews are more favorable towards the Infinity. Customers overwhelming vouch for its great suction power and most are extremely happy with their purchase. Whether you decide to buy a Shark vacuum cleaner will be a judgment call on the money you'll save against some features you'll have to forgo.

Whenever a user writes a Kirby vacuum cleaner review, they have nothing but great things to say about the quality, durability and how great it picks up on all surfaces, regardless of how long they have owned one.

Although many reviews have expressed a less than satisfactory view of the selling techniques of the independent sales agents, the quality of the vacuum cleaner and its ability to perform has never been anything but fantastic.

From the first units designed and engineered by Jim Kirby in 1906 through today, Kirby has listened to the people who use the vacuum cleaners and the feedback from the independent sales force to make the units more useful. There is no other vacuum cleaner on the market with the attachments to help clean every part of a person’s home than Kirby.

The suitcase-like container that holds all the attachments are a mainstay for homeowners since the 1940’s with many people from that era remembering how the children often played with the box while mom did the cleaning. The box was often used for storage when a majority of the attachments inevitably came up missing.

Today’s Kirby vacuum cleaner review reads much the same as those from 40 or 50 years ago, pointing out the power with which it maintains its suction on the floor to extract all the dirt from deep down in the carpet. These reviews are not written by those who demonstrate the units in the homes, but by those who have bought them and still use them daily.

There are many reviews on Sanyo vacuums and, overall, they score very well with many consumers liking their functionality, range and competitive price. (...)

There are many reviews on Sanyo vacuums and, overall, they score very well with many consumers liking their functionality, range and competitive price. But, with so many models to choose from it can be difficult to decide on which ones are the best of the bunch. What follows are reviews on the best Sanyo vacuum cleaner in each major category.

Sanyo Canister Vacuum Cleaner

Folks love canisters because of their ease of use; they're lightweight so they can be easily carried around and when you sweep across the carpet you aren't pushing and pulling the full weight of a vacuum. They're also loved because just about all brands carry on-board tools. And, cleaning curtains and high, hard-to-get-at places is easy.

The Sanyo PowerBoy SC-Y130 offers all this and more. What I mean by more is that the hose is wire-reinforced - not the easily torn plastic variety used in so many canisters - and you get both paper bags as well as a cloth reusable one. The head has an air-driven rotating brush that can be turned on and off at the flick of a switch.

The PowerBoy is a great little vacuum, if there was any drawback with it, it would be that the brush is only 10" wide; if you have a lot of floor space then you'd do better to look at another vacuum.

Sanyo Upright Vacuum Cleaner

I've picked the Performax SC-A115 because I feel it represents real value for money. You get a 12amp motor - this is as large as any domestic vacuum currently available. It also has on-board tools, a generous 25 foot cord, and 5-stage filtration. The brush is an adequate 12 inches in width, but what's really nice is that it has automatic carpet height adjustment - you just push it along and let it deal with the different floor surfaces! With its price tag few other manufacturers can complete - the Electrolux Aptitude can match it but it costs a little more. If you want a reasonably priced upright then take a serious look at the Sanyo Performax.

Sanyo Bagless Vacuum Cleaner

If you like the idea of bagless then you should buy cyclonic. This quite recent technical development produces suction by centrifugal force, which means power and suction that doesn't diminish even when the dust cup is almost full. The SC-H2000 is a cyclonic vacuum with big suction but with a small price tag. Its price compared to other cyclonic vacuums is what set it apart. The motor is 12amps, 30 foot power cord, true HEPA filter, a brush that's 16" wide, large dust cup, and EdgeGrabber technology to suck up dirt right up close to the wall.

But, don't just take my word for it, reading other vacuum cleaner reviews will show just how folks like this cyclonic vacuum; just try comparing it to other brands like the Hoover WindTunnel or the Electrolux bagless vacuum cleaner to see why it's a good deal.

The above three vacuum cleaners from Sanyo, I believe, are the best on offer in their category. Each offers outstanding features, functionality and quality and at prices that are very competitive and that make them a very attractive proposition for potential buyers.
